Position Summary:

 

A 75 year leader in producing valve and fitting solutions for multiple applications is seeking a Senior Materials Scientist to lead research and development of and enhance the materials strategy for market solutions for its line of professional products.  We’re growing and building teams to make an impact in our business.  This role will be responsible for developing and leading research and improving a wide range of products and raw materials enabling the Semiconductor, Oil & Gas, and Alternative Fuels industries.  This role independently studies alloy properties to support new development of products and to enhance existing ones.  This position acts as a technical resource and subject matter expert for materials-related selection and providing immediate technical guidance throughout the company as well as to the global distributor and customer community.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
 

  • Direct activities of engineers and technicians involved in the research and development of product or process technology in advance of new product development projects.
  • Collaborate with Swagelok marketing, business units, distributors, and customers to identify and chart technology development opportunities.
  • Serve as an intradepartmental technical expert and advisor.   Work with others in the company to solve technical problems.  

 

Disciplined Problem Solving

  • An expert in applying a structured approach to analyzing and addressing root causes of performance deficiencies with preventive action.
  • Includes a knowledge of statistics, root cause analysis, DOE, etc.
  • An expert in the process of analyzing products returned and responding to customers.

 

Project Management

  • Plan, organize, and lead multiple simultaneous projects. Establish and oversee accomplishment of multiple project objectives. Creates, updates, and interprets project schedules and communicates changes and status to Engineering Leadership. Support targets and milestones for project budgets and schedules.
  • Knowledge of miscellaneous software and training programs, and an understanding of team dynamics.
  • Participate in resolving program change of scope issues with Project Engineering and Program Management.

 

Intellectual Property

  • Ability to identify and act upon situations in order to protect the intellectual assets of Swagelok.

 

Modeling (Drafting) and Computer Aided Engineering

  • Knowledge in the methods and software used to create, assess, and archive our product designs that is sufficient to effectively guide others proficient in this area.
  • Knowledge in various computer aided engineering techniques (FEA, CFD) sufficient to effectively guide others proficient in this area and interpret, evaluate, and weigh analytical results.

 

Design Process

  • Knowledge of the process of taking a product concept to mass production.
  • Includes knowledge of brainstorming, stress analysis, stack-ups, reliability testing, concurrent engineering, and product verification and validation.

 

Lab Evaluations

  • An expert in the laboratory evaluation processes and test equipment used to assess the performance of products at all stages of the life cycle.
  • Expert in product and component testing, analysis techniques, and analytical tools.

 

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

 

Required:

  • Advanced Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university
  • 5+ years of on-the-job industrial experience or equivalent developmental experience in a professional position
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship both now and in the future


Preferred:

  • Recognized as a technical expert with demonstrated breadth and depth of knowledge within the additive manufacturing community.
  • 10+ years of experience in the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts and practices of a variety of sciences and technical disciplines.
  • Demonstrates initiative and drive.  Set and achieves goals and is focused on outcome.  Is accountable for results.
  • Understands the big picture and demonstrates strategic vision.
  • Able to demonstrate both breadth and depth of technical knowledge, insight, and ability.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, experience with design processes, successful new product introduction experience, creative/innovative thinking. Inspires and mentors others.
  • Proven track record of driving change and ability to execute technology development plan
  • Able to conduct advanced technical research in a variety of disciplines. Manages multiple projects simultaneously. Experience with working on and leading cross functional teams.
  • Able to communicate with internal & external customers and upper management as needed
  • Able to apply experience and knowledge across organizational levels.
  • Possesses advanced problem solving and significant decision-making abilities, excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong computer and office software skills.
  • Experience and expertise in material testing and characterization.
  • Advanced (DOE, Six Sigma) problem-solving experience
  • Knowledge in the methods and software used to create, assess, and archive our product designs that is sufficient to effectively guide others proficient in this area.
  • Knowledge in various computer aided engineering techniques (FEA, CFD) sufficient to effectively guide others proficient in this area and interpret, evaluate, and weigh analytical results.

 

Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Staff position requiring an influential presence across all technical functions as well as departments outside of engineering.
  • May be required to pass pre-employment and annual Vision Acuity tests
